UK Government extends measures to protect businesses from eviction

The UK Government has announced an extension to the protection measures for business tenants affected by COVID-19 to 31 March 2021. The extension to the moratorium on commercial lease forfeitures was due to end on 31 December 2020.

The announcement states that the following protection measures will be extended until 31 March 2021:

  • The protections from forfeiture for business tenancies for non-payment of rent. This will bring the length of time business tenants have been given support from the threat of eviction to one year.
  • The restrictions on landlords recovering unpaid rent by the exercise of commercial rent arrears recovery (CRAR).

This final extension to protections from the threat of eviction will give landlords and tenants 3 months to come to an agreement on unpaid rent. The UK Government is clear that where businesses can pay any or all of their rent, they should do so.
