The increase in popularity for using Do-it-Yourself (DIY) kits to make a Will is thought to cause problems for around 38,000 UK families each year.
Whilst the DIY Will writing kits are believed to save money, many people are unaware that simple errors can make the document invalid. The implications of this can be severe, often causing families financial and emotional stress whilst risking your legacy to be diminished by legal costs.
In an article published by The Guardian, Eileen McCormack explained how she spent over two years dealing with her cousin’s estate. It was found that his DIY Will document had several mistakes including using different coloured inks and it was incorrectly witnessed.
“I tried to tell George to go to a solicitor, but he never did. This has made the whole process very stressful for those left behind. It’s also very sad because George put a lot of thought into how his estate would be distributed in the event of his death. He wouldn’t have wanted this.”
