Esports enter new era

The world of electronic sports (better known as esports) has entered a new era with the creation of a first world association – The World Esports Association (or WESA) – which seeks to claim jurisdiction over matters such as regulations, revenue sharing and player representation. WESA is the result of joint collaboration between industry-leading professional esports teams such as Ninjas In Pyjamas and ESL, the world’s largest esports company.
The move to establish WESA will draw inevitable comparisons with traditional world sports governing bodies, such as the IOC and FIFA, which have faced significant challenges in recent years.
It will be interesting to see whether and how the key stakeholders in esports capitalise on the fact that they start the WESA journey with a blank sheet of paper and without the burden of a corporate governance and regulatory framework developed piecemeal over many decades. The rapid recent growth in interest in esports, and the significant commercial revenues being generated, dictate that the stakes are high.
