Compulsory Covid Vaccination for Care Home Workers


The UK government will require workers in care homes in England to have been vaccinated against Covid-19, effective from 11 November 2021.

The new requirement for vaccination will apply to front line care staff, agency workers, contractors and volunteers. 

Certain exemptions apply such as for those who can provide evidence that they are medically exempt from the Covid-19 vaccination, under 18s and those providing emergency assistance, including urgent maintenance work within the care home.

Care providers are now being urged by the UK Government to use the grace period up to November to consult with their staff in preparation for the upcoming changes.

Employers in the care sector should be proactive in implementing a clear vaccination policy for staff to reduce the risk of any future employment claims.

At the moment, Welsh Government have no plans to follow the UK Government in making Covid vaccinations compulsory for staff in care homes or elsewhere.  However, this is an interesting development and may be an indication of the direction of travel in terms of policy.  The UK Government have also stated that all over 18’s will have to have completed the vaccination programme by the end of September in order to gain entrance to nightclubs (only in England at the moment) and have explicitly reserved the right to mandate vaccinations in other settings in the interests of public health. Once again Covid-19 is changing the legal landscape and employers and business owners are best advised to keep a close eye on these developments.
