Paramedic awarded £200,000 compensation

A paramedic who was left permanently disabled after tripping during an emergency call has been awarded £200,000 in an out of court settlement.

In 2003 Mr K, 58, was on an emergency call when his equipment bag snagged on a door handle. The force with which Mr K fell caused his shoulder and back to be severely damaged, meaning he can no longer walk without a stick or perform daily tasks unaided.

Mr K was forced to take early retirement following the accident but had repeatedly told management of the risks involved with heavy equipment bags compared to previously used rucksacks, which have since been reinstated.

West Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust admitted liability and settled Mr K's claim out of court this week.  Mr K said "To me it's not a victory, it's just compensation for what we have gone through and the money we have spent trying to get me well."
